Assoc Prof Moodley to join ICA #4 on Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence
Moodley, from the Department of Computer Science and UCT’s newly established AI Research Unit, is one of just nineteen fellows selected globally to participate in the 4th ICA on Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence. The 4th ICA will start with a virtual opening meeting in June 2021, followed by two main sessions in Paris, France in October 2021, and in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in June 2022.
Moodley’s research focuses on the development of Adaptive and Cognitive Systems. His current interest is on general mechanisms for model learning, model update, knowledge discovery and belief revision. His research has a strong applied focus, and he is investigating novel ways to engineer adaptive “thinking” systems for data fusion, situation analysis and prediction and knowledge discovery in diverse application domains, including health, biodiversity, finance, and earth observation.
Moodley is a member of the recently established AI Research Unit (AIRU) at UCT, an accredited research unit in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science. The unit hosts two research groups and the Directorate of South Africa’s national Centre for AI research (CAIR). CAIR is a distributed South African research network with nine established and two emerging research groups across eight universities funded primarily by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).
The CAIR research groups at UCT are the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Group (KRR), led by Professor Tommie Meyer and the Adaptive and Cognitive Systems Lab led by Associate Professor Deshen Moodley. KRR’s focus is on belief change, defeasible reasoning, and other forms of non-monotonic and non-classical reasoning. The Adaptive and Cognitive Systems Lab investigates architectures and frameworks for self-learning cognitive systems that are able to adapt to an evolving environment.
