The School of IT, in collaboration with CodeSpaceZA, is offering high school learners a chance to tackle coding and robotics as an extra-mural on UCT's campus.

A series of extramural courses will run in school holidays and Saturdays to introduce learners to the world of tech and coding.

During the upcoming school holiday learners can attend a one-week intensive holiday programme that will offer Grade 10-12 learners the opportunity to explore a variety of fun activities like coding robots, coding music, designing tech solutions and meeting tech professionals.

To ensure that these classes are available to all, scholarships are available to learners who apply through admissions days hosted on UCT's campus in May and June.

Teachers who want to share this opportunity with their learners can request an info session at their school by contacting CodeSpace directly.

Courses will include:

  • Robotics: programming an actual robot to move in a specific pattern and create shapes.
  • Sonic Pi: creating a tune by coding on Sonic Pi.
  • Visual programming: creating working code by using programming logic and code building blocks, which translate across different programming languages.

Learners will also get the chance to meet people who use technology and coding in their various jobs, and ask them questions.
